We are pleased to report that Video Art & Experimental Film Festival 2011 was a huge success! Over two days, audiences gathered at Tribeca Cinemas to watch some of the best in contemporary video art and experimental film. Though the festival drew submissions from around the world, we were still lucky enough to have almost half of the twenty-five artists join us in person. Alicia Matthews flew in from the UK, Daphna Mero from Israel, and Marco and Saverio Lanza from Italy, with others travelling from around the US to be there. It was amazing, and a lot of fun, to finally meet the talented men and women behind the works.

On Friday night, panelists Kalup Linzy, Brian House, and Shelly Silver spoke to a packed house about the current state of video art, as well as its future in the digital age. The reception afterward was a buzz of excitement as artists, friends, and audience-members mingled in the lavish Varick Room. It was a reminder that the festival is only a starting point for conversations and collaborations extending beyond this year’s event. We can’t wait to see what happens next!

Thanks to all who helped us put on this wonderful event, from the Tribeca Cinemas staff to Kalup, Brian, and Shelly, to the artists of course, who made it all possible.

Enjoy the photos…and here’s to next year!

With just days to go until the 2011 Video Art and Experimental Film Festival, we here at Videoart.net are eagerly finishing off final preparations for what is sure to be a stunning event. If you have not yet gotten your tickets, you can do so here. Be sure to get them soon, because tickets are going fast!

On the second day of programming, the festival will feature a panel discussion with three luminaries from the worlds of art and new media: Kalup Linzy, a renowned performance and video artist; Brian House, a creative technologist for the The New York Times Company’s research and development lab; and Shelly Silver, associate professor at Columbia University and vastly respected artist working in video. The hour-long panel will take place December 8 at 8:40 PM, followed by a gala reception. Topics to be discussed include the globalization of video art and experimental film, the rise of online communities, and the impact of technology on art and artists. Brittany Stanley, Editor-in-Chief of Videoart.net, will moderate.

It’s rare that minds of this caliber come together. Come with your questions ready and your notebooks open. It should be a truly special evening. See you there!

KALUP LINZY

Kalup Linzy is a video and performance artist based in Brooklyn, New York. Born in Stuckey, Florida. Linzy received his MFA from the University of South Florida. He also attended the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture. Linzy has been the recipient of numerous awards including a grant from the Louis Comfort Tiffany Foundation, the John Simon Guggenheim Memorial Foundation fellowship, Creative Capital Foundation grant, a Jerome Foundation Fellowship, and an Art Matters Grant. Linzy’s best-known work is a series of politically charged videos that satirize the conventions of the television soap opera. His work has been included in exhibitions Frequency at the Studio Museum in Harlem, Prospect.1 New Orleans, 30 Americans, Rubell Family Collection, MoMA PS1 Greater New York, At Home/Not At Home: Works from the Collection of Martin and Rebecca Eisenberg, Hessel Museum of Art, Bard College. His work is in the public collections at The Studio Museum in Harlem, Whitney Museum of Art, and Museum of Modern Art. In summer 2010, Linzy appeared on the long running ABC soap opera General Hospital alongside James Franco in a storyline that incorporated performance art.
Brian House is a bricoleur whose work has traversed locative media, experimental music, interactive narrative, and social practice. By constructing embodied, participatory systems, he seeks to negotiate between programmed constraints and the serendipity of everyday life.

Currently, he is a member of the Research and Development lab at The New York Times and teaches at the Parsons Design and Technology MFA program.
